Out pets are so much more involved with our lives these days and many dog owners want to include their dogs on family days out. While we hear so much about dog restrictions at the moment, there are still plenty of dog friendly places where your dog can enjoy a day out too. York and the surrounding area, is a wonderful place to visit – and it’s pretty dog friendly too. The Whippet Inn, Steakhouse.

Maybe he had one too many doggy beers at the Whippet Inn?

Aptly named, the Whippet Inn, steakhouse, welcomes dog in the bar and garden areas of this beautiful Grade II listed building. Granted, its not set in one of York’s prettiest streets, but it claims to have superb, unpretentious food and seasonally-inspired plates. It’s super-central, easy to get to and has WOW cocktails too.

Yorkshire Air Museum.

Dogs are allowed everywhere on this 22 acre site, both indoor and outdoor. They are the UK’s largest aviation museum and located just outside the city of York. There is also a lovely woodland walk.

Yorkshire Lavender.

These, stunning, award winning lavender gardens are set just outside York in an Area of Outstanding National Beauty. There are stunning gardens, plant shop and café. Perfect for a relaxing day out with your pooch.

Poochie Park.

Poochie Park is an enclosed dog field for exclusive use. It’s a 1.5 acres enclosed dog park to allow dogs to run free in a safe environment. Great for a good run aroound off lead if you’ve been visiting York city with your dog. You can book 30 – 60 minute slots on-line. There is a shelter, picnic benches and running water.

Caste Howard Gardens.

Castle Howard Gardens are just breathtakingly beautiful. There are 1,000 acres of glorious woodland, lakes, temples and fountains to explore with your four-legged pal. Situated in the backdrop of the Howardian Hills, you and your dog are sure to have fantastic day out. While dogs are very welcome, they must remain on the lead throughout the grounds.

Castle Howard and it’s absolutely stunning gardens, where dogs are welcome to explore with dogs on lead. 1,000 acres of woodland, lakes and fountains. Well worth a visit.

River Mountain Experience, Yorkshire Dales.

Fancy a family outing in a canoe with a picnic? The river mountain experience in the Yorkshire Dales runs canoe trips and guided walks for families – including the family dog. What’s more – dogs go free! They even provide dog life jackets. It should be noted, they cannot accommodate dogs bigger than a collie. This is for safety reasons.

York Maze.

With over 20 attractions, rides and shows York Maze is a fun-filled day out for all the family, including Fido. York Maze houses the largest maze in Europe, covering an area of 8 Wembley football pitches – that’s a lot of exercise! D0gs are welcome, but must be kept on the lead.
