Dealing With Puppy Puddles – How to Clean Puppy Accidents In The Home.

What’s the best way to clean up puppy accidents in the home? This Holidays4Dogs article will provide some hints and tips – including ideas for natural homemade cleaners, which will remove stains and odours effectively. Read on to find out more about dealing with puppy puddles.

If you have a dog, chances are at some point, you are going to have to clean up accidents. Young puppies in particular, are not able to hold their toilet urges for as long as adult dogs. Therefore, they need regular access to the outdoors to avoid too many accidents on the carpet.

Rescue dogs can sometimes have lapses in house training if they have been kennelled for a while. Even dogs with normal house training manners, can have the odd accident if they are feeling unwell, or left in for too long. Likewise, elderly dogs can become incontinent and less able to realise when they need to go out.

Its all in the scent.

dealing with puppy puddlesWhenever dogs go to the toilet, they pass particular scent chemicals which encourages them to return to the same spot again. This helps to prompt their elimination response.

Therefore, it is really important to ensure that any messes are cleaned thoroughly with the right products to eliminate these chemicals odours.

With puppies, in particular, the presence of urine odours in the house will encourage the pup to carry on eliminating in the same places.

Also, because a dog’s sense of smell is so much greater than ours, they can easily detect odours that have simply been masked with ordinary household cleaners.

How to effectively clean canine accidents in the home.

If your dog eliminates in the house, quickly blot the area with paper towels. Pour a small amount of water on the spot and keep blotting with paper until the liquid becomes clear.

Use a specialised pet cleaner applied to the spot. This needs to be an odour remover with anti-microbial enzymes which will break down and neutralise the smell. There are various products you can buy specifically for cleaning up pet accidents.

Natural cleaning.

If you want to have a go at making your own natural cleaning products that work really well on pet urine. A combination of vinegar and baking soda works a treat.  Baking soda is a natural odour remover and white vinegar is perfect for getting rid of stains; even old accident stains.

What you will need:

2 cups of lukewarm water

4 tablespoons of baking soda

2 cups of distilled white vinegar.

Method.

Mix the water and vinegar together and slowly add the baking soda. Be careful, because it will fizz readily. You can pour the solution into a spray bottle for ease of use. Thoroughly spray the spot and leave it for several minutes before rubbing with a cloth and then blotting up with kitchen paper or a towel.

You can also use these ingredients, but in a different way. Blot up the excess urine to start. Sprinkle the area liberally with baking soda. Mix up the water and vinegar and pour the solution directly onto the soiled area. This will create that ‘fizz’, which will penetrate into the stain. After a few minutes, rub with a cloth and blot up excess moisture.

Poop accidents.

Unfortunately, dealing with puppy puddles is only part of house training. this is common in puppies in the early days of being in a new home. If your dog poops indoors by accident, fingers crossed he will leave a nice solid lump.

However, if you have an already house trained dog, pooping indoors can often mean the dog has an upset tummy. If the poop leaves a stain on the carpet, remove as much excess as you can and blot in the same way as you would for urine.

If there is a great deal of mess, use a piece of card to scoop underneath. Avoid pressing the substance into the carpet any further. Use a specialised cleaner as above – you may need to repeat two, or three times, to effectively remove the stain and odour.

Always try and resist the temptation to scrub the carpet as this will potentially spoil the texture and simply rub the deposit and odour deeper into the fibres. Even the palest carpets can be cleaned effectively, but it does make all the difference if you use the right products.

Never scold puppies, or dogs, for accidents in the house.

Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid the occasional mess in the house if you have dogs. Puppies, older dogs, or dogs with health issues are more likely to have accidents in the house. Puppies, very quickly learn the ropes and house training doesn’t usually take very long. If you are patient and kind dealing with puppy puddles is only temporary.

As frustrated as you may be, do not shout at your dog for urinating, or soiling in the house. Most definitely don’t rub his, or her, nose in it. This is cruel and unfair and will only make your dog afraid of you. This especially important if the accident happened while you were out, or otherwise not supervising your dog.

Conclusion.

Set your dog, or puppy, up for success. Supervise puppies and older dogs and make sure they have frequent access to the outdoors. Other than this, accept there may be the odd accident and keep some suitable cleaners on hand, so you can quickly clean up puppy accidents in the home.
